The wiggley tubes of the #ER 〰️ provide a separate compartment inside the cell where proteins have space to fold up properly. If proteins don't fold properly they can cause diseases such as #alzheimers #parkinsons and #glaucoma
There are two types of ER. The 'rough ER' is close to the nucleus and has ribosomes attached so that proteins can go straight from the ribosomes into the ER ⛄ ➡️ 〰️ The 'smooth ER' doesn't have ribosomes attached. In our last post we talked about how instructions in #DNA 🧬 get turned into a molecule called #RNA. This RNA travels out of the nucleus to deliver the message about how to make #proteins 📨 But where does this message get delivered to?
You guessed it... the ribosomes! Ribosomes act as tiny little machines, which read the message in the RNA and use the instructions to build proteins. Proteins can then go on to perform all sorts of activities in the cell, including acting as machines themselves 🛠
Ribosomes can be found in the cytoplasm (the 'space' inside a cell) or are often attached to another organelle called the endoplasmic reticulum, or ER for short.

Ricin made headlines in the late 1970s murder of a Bulgarian journalist. An assassin shot a tiny pellet covered in ricin out of the tip of an umbrella...into his leg.
Ricin is a highly toxic protein in castor beans. You’d only come in contact with it if you chewed the bean or breathed in castor bean powder… highly unlikely.
Ricin stops our cells from creating new protein by permanently blocking the activity of ribosomes--those cellular machines we need to make all the proteins in our cells. When a cell stops making protein it’ll die.
If you inhale ricin, within a few hours you’ll have a fever, start coughing, and your lungs will stop working. If you eat it, you’ll have severe vomiting and diarrhea, and your organs will quickly shut down. Either way, without immediately seeking medical attention, you won’t live long. And, sorry, no antidote for this one.

How to “make” experiment ready RNA?⁣
⁣⁣
⁣A lot of my experiments have to do with RNA interactions. RNA stands for ribonucleic acid, and consists of a nucleotide connected to a sugar, which is connected to a phosphate group. Think of the sugar and the phosphate as two people holding hands to form a link. The sugar and the phosphates link up and create a single strand (or chain) of RNA. It’s similar to DNA, except that the sugar part of RNA has a slightly different chemical structure, and instead of RNA existing as a double stranded helix (something DNA exists as), it is typically only one strand. DNA encodes our genes. It’s basically the body’s hard drive; but genes are just directions. The results of genes (i.e. the color of your eyes, the hemoglobin in your blood, whether or not you’re lactose intolerant, etc.) are the proteins that are expressed from them. RNA is the middleman between protein expression and DNA. RNA gets transcribed from DNA in a process called transcription. A special protein (RNA polymerase) goes to whatever region of the DNA where there’s a gene that can be expressed. It creates an RNA copy of the DNA (remember different sugars make up RNA vs. DNA). This RNA is processed by the cell and eventually ends up at something called the ribosome, where the RNA in translated into a protein.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣So, RNA is really important; however, RNA loves to interact with itself (self-absorbed, I know). Zika is an RNA based virus, so when the virion (a single particle of the virus) inserts its genetic RNA into your cell, there is a potential for the foreign RNA to interact with your already present cellular RNA. When/if this happens, the result is a two stranded RNA species, which is a big no no for your cell. Ribosomes (the thing that “reads” or translates the RNA into a protein) only take up single stranded RNA species. If viral Zika RNA and your own cellular RNA are interacting with each other, your RNA can’t go into the ribosome to get translated into a protein. That means that whatever protein that RNA coded for will get expressed (or made) less. This can have adverse effects on the biochemistry that takes place in your body. ⁣
