Morning run on Mt Diablo. The @brokenarrowskyrace training run was a great excuse to visit a new park and run with good company. The landscape on Diablo was pretty arid but there were still pockets of trees, shrubs and wildflowers. Most noticeable was the thriving thickets of poison oak. Thanks @poleary87 for the route planning and 📸 #mountdiablostatepark

Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, Samarkand, Uzbekistan, 11th August, 2019. Sketch showing the tomb positions.
.
In 1740, king Nader Shah of the Afsharid Empire tried to carry away Tamerlane's sarcophagus. Nader idolized Timur. He imitated Timur's military prowess and, later in his reign, Timur's cruelty, but in the process of removal the sarcophagus broke in two. This was interpreted as a bad omen. His advisers urged him to return the stone to its rightful place.
.
As with other Muslim mausoleums, the stones are just markers; the actual crypts are in a chamber beneath. In the centre is Timur’s stone, once a single block of dark-green jade. The plain marble marker to the left of Timur’s is that of Ulugbek; to the right is that of Mir Said Baraka, one of Timur’s spiritual advisors. In front lies Mohammed Sultan. The stones behind Timur’s mark the graves of his sons Shah Rukh (the father of Ulugbek) and Miran Shah. Behind these lies Sheikh Seyid Umar, the most revered of Timur’s teachers, said to be a descendant of the Prophet Mohammed. Timur ordered Gur-e-Amir built around Umar’s tomb.
.
The Soviet anthropologist Mikhail Gerasimov opened the crypts in 1941 and, among other things, confirmed that Timur was tall (1.7m) and lame in the right leg and right arm (from injuries suffered when he was 25) – and that Ulugbek died from being beheaded. He found on Timur’s grave an inscription to the effect that ‘whoever opens this will be defeated by an enemy more fearsome than I’. The next day, 22 June, Hitler attacked the Soviet Union.

Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, Samarkand, Uzbekistan, 11th August, 2019.
.
The Gūr-i Amīr or Guri Amir is a mausoleum of the Asian conqueror Amir Timur in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. This is the final resting place of not only Timur but also of his two sons and two grandsons (including Ulugbek). This mausoleum was built by Timur in 1404 for his grandson and proposed heir, Mohammed Sultan, who had died the previous year. Timur had built a simple crypt for himself at Shakhrisabz, his birthplace. The story goes that when Timur died unexpectedly of pneumonia in Kazakhstan (in the course of planning an expedition against the Chinese) in the winter of 1405, the passes back to Shakhrisabz were snowed in and he was interred here instead.
.
The earliest part of the complex was built at the end of the 14th century by the orders of Muhammad Sultan. Now only the foundations of the madrasah and khanaka, the entrance portal and a part of one of four minarets remains. The construction of the mausoleum itself began in 1403 after the sudden death of Muhammad Sultan, Tamerlane's heir apparent and his beloved grandson.
.
Outwardly the Gur-e Amir Mausoleum is a one-cupola building. It is famous for its simplicity of construction. It is an octahedral building crowned by an azure fluted dome. The exterior decoration of the walls consists of the blue, light-blue and white tiles organized into geometrical and epigraphic ornaments against a background of terracotta bricks. The dome is of a bright blue color with deep rosettes and white spots. Heavy ribbed fluting gives an amazing expressiveness to the cupola.

Shastri Memorial in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, 10th August, 2019.
.
Lal Bahadur Shastri (2 October 1904 - 11 January 1966) was the third Prime Minister of the Republic of India. After the declaration of ceasefire of the Indo-Pak war which ended on 23 September 1965 with a United Nations-mandated ceasefire, Shastri and Pakistani President Muhammad Ayub Khan attended a summit in Tashkent, organized by Mr. Kosygin.
.
On 10 January 1966, Shastri and Khan signed the Tashkent Declaration. The next day Shastri, who had suffered two heart attacks earlier, died supposedly of a heart attack at 1:32 am in Tashkend.
.
However, Shastri’s wife and family suspected that Shastri was poisoned by the cook of Indian ambassador in Moscow, who was responsible for preparing his meal in Tashkent. He was the only Indian Prime Minister, and indeed probably one of the few heads of government, to have died in office overseas.
.
The monument of Shastri and the street named after this significant personality are placed in the very center of Tashkent. This is the place of visit of Indian travelers and businessman visiting the capital of Uzbekistan.

Right : I saw this Bollywood movie “Tashkent Files” in April and since then I wanted to visit Tashkent where he breathed his last under suspicious circumstances. . The movie was poorly made but somehow it instigated me and 4 months later I packed my bag and left for Tashkent, Uzbekistan. . Left : this is in Tashkent the small statue that exist in his memory. He also breathed his last in a building near to this park where this statue exist today. . Mount Diablo looking like Switzerland last winter. This was from a morning hike into the foothills. Snow rarely falls in the Bay Area. I had a great opportunity to capture this unexpected event...

🎀Lil’ Miss waving👋 at her Daddy from @mountdiabloca summit⛰(approx. 3,900ft.) FYI her Daddy is 45miles off in the distance in San Francisco Bay.🌉 You can actually 👀see the Bay directly in the middle of this picture under the fog.🌬 #daddyslittlegirl #makingmemories #mountdiablostatepark #walnutcreekca #danvilleca #highastheclouds #momentsofmychildhood #getoutsideandplay #laylaslife #bowsbowsbows #walmartfashion #californiastateparks

One of the perks of nighttime fieldwork is getting to see all of the other amazing organisms out and about. So far, we’ve seen many nightjars, an opossum, a tarantula (genus Aphonopelma), and a bunch of other amazing things. One of my favorites so far is this incredibly fussy Calisoga longitarsus, known as a false tarantula because it is not in the family Theraphosidae which contains spiders more commonly referred to as tarantulas. This beautiful spider is in the family Nemesiidae. Just the flash of my camera was enough to induce the spider to strike.

It’s been some time since I’ve last posted, so I apologize in advance for the blast! Here’s a jaw-dropping sesiid moth, Synanthedon resplendens, from a daytime scouting hike at our field site, Mt. Diablo to start things out!

Hiked Mt Diablo on Saturday with the homies. Over 6 miles. Some rediculous steep uphills. Legs were done by the end. #mountdiablostatepark

Originally intended to hike to the top of #MountDiablo, but we got distracted and climbed all over a bunch of cool sandstone instead. .

Have you spotted a black-tailed deer at Mount Diablo State Park? A “keystone” species in the native California coastal ecosystem, they bound through the 20,000-acre park. In the summer, these beauties will be reddish-brown, and brownish-gray during the winter. #WildlifeWednesday

Cousins having a chat about the things in life. 😁 Too cute! With larger families, it’s so cool to have kids close in age for play dates, to hang out with, and honestly just be around. I know these two will be buds for life! #cousingoals #mountdiablostatepark #mountdiablo #familyphotography

First time printing some of my photography work and I really like what I see!! I started doing my family wall of fame 😁 and decided to incorporate some of my nature pictures. Wonderful hike today enroute Mt. Diablo Summit. Pretty strenuous decline on the 'Juniper to the Summit loop' trail. Great to have had #salomonshoes for better grip and agility!
Managed to get in some trail running on the way down and evolved into a great adventure after making a few wrong turns here and there😁
All in all, stunning views on a pretty sunny day in California. Kudos to the team!
